Q: What is Reptile Guard A: It's an online comic that I make because I really like to draw cartoons. It's the best story Idea I've come up with to date, so I decided that I should make it into an online comic so that I had a creative outlet and a reason to draw. If you're still confused as to what Reptile Guard is supposed to be, like the actual guard itself, check the characters page. It has some back story on it. Q: Why reptiles? How did that all come about? A: Well, It all started long ago when I was doodling on my notes (all good cartoons start that way). Anyway, I was trying to draw a turtle, but not like all the turtles I'de drawn before (I have a little obsession with turtles), I wanted to draw one that was more 3-D ish. Anyway, this lead to me experimenting in my sketchbook and I drew the turtle that you can see on the random art page. So I only had the idea for Guard Turtle as a cartoon. It was the era when Cartoon Network was making a whole lot of original shows, and so I thought that it would make a good pitchable idea to have a turtle that could guard anything and totally kick butt. At that point, I just called the whole cartoon idea "Guard Turtle," but then I was doodling in my notes again and drew a very early version of Corbral. One of the first cartooning things I did was to adapt Calvin and Hobbs comics into a turtle and his stuffed snake, and it was like in 6th grade (I wish I could find that notebook). But I was trying to remember how I drew a snake then and also trying to revamp it, and came up with corbral. Anyway, I doodled a bunch in my notes with them two, just because they were pretty darn cute and people liked them for that, but it only came about that they would be partners later on when I first tried to draw a Guard Turtle comic (it was still called Guard Turtle, and Corbral was like a secondary character). The old old comic is here. Anyway, then like junior year, I saw this one cartoon that made me realize that childlike innocence coupled with unnessecary strength made for a very lovable character, and Allie was born. Then I knew that I would need another character to round it out, and what other archtype to fill out my team than the mysterious and smart alec gun nut, aka Roger. So there you go, that's why reptiles: it started with a turtle. Besides I really like reptiles, so that's another reason. Q: Do your characters have any super powers? A: Um, no, not really. They are very intelligent (well, Allie does her best) and they've trained really hard so that they're incredibly phisically fit and combat ready, which isn't a bad combination and can sometimes seem like a super power. But no, they don't really have any super powers like seeing through walls or flying or anything. Although Corbral was working on some IR glasses that were so sensitive that they could see through some walls a while back. Q: Isn't this all a little far fetched? Like humans just not freaking out when they see a huge Aligator walking around? A: Uh, well, it's a cartoon. Stuff like that happens in cartoons and it's perfectly normal. Serriously, watch Cartoon Network sometime. |
