Wow, I'm in the double digits. This makes Reptile Guard the longest, most time-spent-on comic to date in my career as a cartoonist. Heh, look at me talkin' like I'm a real cartoonist. I'm just a guy still in High School with some good ideas and a love to create. I still just wish for the day that I could find the perfect way to make one of my cartoon ideas really big. I mean, look at James Farr, he had a good idea, put it on the web, and now it's being made into a movie. And there's the always classic Homestar Runner, made by the brothers Chaps from their home. But who am I kidding, it's who you know in the entertainment business, and I don't know anyone... yet. Well, I've rambled on about my career for long enough, which is more than planned. I think I should show everyone something. Look on the new Random Art Page. I was lookin' through a bunch of old sketchbooks and I found my very first drawings of Guard Turtle, the staple of Reptile Guard. It all started when I drew him. The cartoon was supposed to be called Guard Turtle, and he was supposed to not really have a name. But I didn't get enough into it then to make much more than some doodles on my notes in class (it was Freshman year). Then I was messin around a little bit with a really old (6th grade) idea where I re-drew a whole bunch of Calvin and Hobbs (MAD props to Bill Waterson) and I made them all turtles and Hobbs was a snake called Jake. Well, I messed around with the snake idea and drew a much better one, and that was the birth of Corbral. They graced my notes for about a year, and I made Corbral into Guard Turtle's partner. Then I think it was when I watched this one episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy that I came up with Allie. In the episode, Grim made a Mandy replica out of a bunch of junk. It always wanted to play, but was much more harmful than it realized. That's when I realized that the juxtaposition of the innocence and exhuberance of youth against a deadly and powerful exterior made for a very lovable character. 'Cause those types of characters are cute, but provide comic relief when they wail on people and still remain cute. So Allie was born and I decided at the same time that good teams are made of four or five, and I didn't want another power rangers, so I chose four, and so I sought another character type that would ballance out the team, and an over cocky gun nut was the answer. Now why did I just give out the whole cognative process behind my story? I really don't know, but it felt good to get down in writing. Like I might forget. Ah whatever. I'm 18 now, and I can sue the pants off of anyone that dares use my story or characters without my permission. That feels kinda good. Ok, I'm tired now, so good night. |
